After a delayed warm-up, VSI kicked off nearly an hour later than originally intended. VSI Tampa Bay FC's forward
Andriy Budnyy opened the match with an early, unassisted goal.
Portland Timbers Reserves retaliated quickly in the first five minutes of play with a goal from midfielder Michael Nanchoff. The play continued back and forth with scoring opportunities and an overwhelming eight goals in total by the end of the game.
Timbers' Coach Cameron Knowles said, "I think inter-league play is excellent. It takes the competitiveness of the matches to another level."
VSI Tampa Bay FC's Andriy Budnyy delivered an excellent performance as he fired another one home with an assist from midfielder Joseph 'JT' Noone in 12th minute of the match. Moments later Shawn Chin clipped another one in with an assist from Chad Burt and Douglas Dos Santos rounded out the half with an unassisted goal in the 45th minute of play to see VSI enter the half up 4-1.
Interim Head Coach Joel Harrison said, "We were successful in scoring goals which has been a problem for us, so that is a positive step for us."
Timbers Reserves Coach Cameron Knowles said, "Obviously it was a dissappointing 1st half, but a good show of character's quality in the second half."
As the second half began, so did the Timbers' comeback. Timbers' Sebastien Rincon initiated the attack in the 47th minute of the match with Jose Valencia securing the third goal in the 56th minute. Midfielder Sal Zizzo equalized the game for the Timbers on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
The center official called back Sal Zizzo's penalty kick due to a Portland violation, giving VSI fans hope, only to have them fall moments later when Zizzo repeated his performance with a penatly kick to the left corner of the net past VSI Keeper Alex Horwath.
After Zizzo's goal, VSI substitutions came from both sides in the way of VSI's Donatelli, McGuinness and Janneh entering the match and Portland's Desir and Macchione entering. This would be Jamie McGuinness debut match as a professional.
Both Keepers Horwath and Gleeson would come up with huge saves in the remaining minutes of the match allowing Zizzo' goal, to remain the last goal of the match, giving a point to both sides for the night as the result remained 4-4.
Interim Head Coach Joel Harrison had this to say of the goals against, "The lesson to learn is ---the problems and goals we gave up were mistakes on our part and we can fix those. We've had some players who weren't getting time before now that are showing well so we have more options now; which is huge going into a weekend of two games in three days."
